Automakers Balk At New Fuel Bill; Compromise Expected

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

Automakers described as 'unattainable' the revised fuel economy proposal unveiled last Friday by a Senate committee chairman. The new bill, when approved, would force the automakers, gas regulator, to significantly increase the fuel economy standards to a fleetwide, gas regulator, average of 28.5 miles per gallon by 2015 and 35 mpg by the year 2020, with four percent increases every year after that.

The bill, as proposed by U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, the chair of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and Alaska's Ted Stevens, the committee's ranking Republican, is expected to entertain amendments to respond to the automakers' clamor. The bill will now be facing a vote in committee on whether to deliver the same to the full, gas regulator, Senate.

Sen. Inouye said that many senate staffs had worked for 10 days to reach a compromise bill, gas regulator, that automakers could accept. "None of us here want to put our domestic automakers out of business," Inouye said. "You will find most of your concerns have been addressed."

Automakers said last Friday that the proposal was about as bad as they could have imagined. Since the proposal of the bill, criticism has never come to a halt. The EBC brake, gas regulator, pads also may not be successful in stopping the ridicule from spilling over.

"Basically, it is unattainable up until 2020 and unattainable afterward," said Gloria Bergquist, a spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the trade group that represents the General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler, gas regulator, AG, the Toyota Motor Corp. and other automakers. "We think this is still going to be a big burden on Americans who need work vehicles."

U, gas regulator, .S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit, who has been actively lobbying colleagues, gas regulator, in recent days, criticized the draft for being too complicated and including some issues that had not been proposed earlier. "For instance, it includes a requirement to increase CAFE standards by four percent per year after 2020," Levin said in a statement. "More progress can be made in reducing oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions if we focus our resources on leap-ahead technologies instead of forcing companies to make incremental improvements to meet an arbitrary standard."

The Congress mandated automakers to increase passenger car fuel economy from an average of 13 mpg to 27.5 mpg in 1975. That standard has remained untouched because vehicle manufacturers have dynamically lobbied against increases.

The bill comes amid increasing concerns in Congress about the effect of auto tailpipe emissions on climate change. To stress, vehicles in the United States account for about 20 percent of greenhouse gas, gas regulator, emissions in the US and about five percent worldwide. The bill would also regulate the fuel economy of medium and heavy-duty trucks thus imposing a four percent yearly improvement commencing in 2011.

The proposed bill would empower the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to set fuel economy standards and do it based on size, as NHTSA has already implemented for light trucks. Additionally, the bill has "off ramps" that give the government agency discretion to cut fuel economy mandates if it determines they are not cost effective or not feasible in a given model year. The agency also has to issue new safety rules to enhance the compatibility of vehicle bumper heights to ensure, gas regulator, car occupants' protection when different, gas regulator, sized vehicles collide.

One controversial issue behind the proposed bill is the whether the agency would be under pressure not to use the off-ramps for domestic automakers if the Toyota Motor Corp. and the Honda Motor Co. are able to meet the requirements.

Automakers also are dismayed that after the 2009 model year they would lose the fuel economy credit for building flexible-fuel vehicles that run on E85 - a fuel made of 85 percent ethanol. But they would be able to use CAFE credits earned for five years and also would be able to purchase and sell credits among, gas regulator, manufacturers.

Automakers can use "credits" to meet fuel economy mandates, even though their vehicles are less efficient than required and, gas regulator, there is no requirement that consumers actually use alternative fuels. The credit trading system would amount to a "wealth transfer" between automakers and have no impact on improving the environment,, gas regulator, Bergquist said.

Experts in the industry said that it might require GM, Ford and Chrysler to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to Toyota and Honda in order to comply with the law. The bill also would require a new labeling program to promote the, gas regulator, vehicles that have superb fuel economy, gas regulator,, gas regulator, and the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

Joan Claybrook, an environmental advocate who heads Public Citizen, said that the bill "does not go far enough. "Automakers could easily hit 40 miles per gallon. With the polar bears and penguins in deep, gas regulator, trouble, this is the year Congress will finally do something."

The Bush administration proposed raising fuel economy standards by an average of four percent annually starting in September 2009 for passenger cars and September 2011 for light trucks in order to limit gasoline usage by five percent annually in 2017, or 8.5 billion gallons every year.

California To Enforce Stringent Auto Emission Regulations

Author: Joe Thompson

Source: articledashboard.com

Earlier, the state of California issued proposed emissions regulations that are expected to be enforced in the next decade. The proposed regulations, when approved, could force automakers to reduce tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases. The latter are intimately, gas regulator, related to global warming. Parenthetically, the state is aiming to reduce 30 percent of harmful gas emissions by passing stringent auto regulations.

California, gas regulator, represents about 10 per cent of the overall American auto market. Auto analysts expect that if the proposed regulations are adopted later this year after the review process, it, gas regulator, would be the very first limits in the United States regarding auto emissions of gasses linked to global warming. In addition, other states in the nation are expected, gas regulator, to follow same regulations to further promote the wellbeing of its citizens and their environment. At least four Northeastern states are observing what California is currently doing.

The California Air Resources Board, the one responsible of the proposed regulations,, gas regulator, said that the stringent emission regulation is made in response to a state law enacted in 2002. Said law requires, gas regulator, automakers to produce cars, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and minivans that emit 30 per cent less greenhouse gases on average by 2015.

The, gas regulator, proposed regulations are expected to increase the, gas regulator, market value of new vehicles. However, the boards did not go into specifics by divulging the anticipated, gas regulator, increase. With the proposed regulations, automotive emission parts are expected to become expensive due to the upgrades and innovations to come up with reduced greenhouse gases emissions. On the one hand, automakers are trying to prevent the proposal from becoming a law. California's actions have tremendous repercussions for, gas regulator, the auto industry because, gas regulator, the state represents about 10 per cent of the nation's car market.

The proposal entails added expenditures to automakers because of the required studies, testing, materials and modifications. Consequently, there is no assurance of a greener pasture attributed to the enhancements of emission control parts.

The upgrades needed to meet California's proposed regulations could add thousands of dollars to the price of a new vehicle, said Eron Shosteck of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. "We are happy to offer these efficient fuel-saving, gas regulator, technologies. But consumers just don't want, gas regulator, to buy them... Automakers believe consumers should have the option to choose." He added that the regulations would result in vehicles that are "lighter, smaller, less powerful, and less able to do what consumers want."

California has the dirtiest air in America. This is the very reason why several movements have been established to take care of the matter. In addition to these cause-oriented movements, the state's Air Resources Board is also determined to promote a cleaner air to preclude illness and other hazardous effects of global warming.

Global warming, the continuous increase of Earth's temperature, is said to be mostly attributable to human activities that results to increased atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, a colorless gas that rises into the atmosphere and traps heat. The situation further leads to warming of the atmosphere by escalating the greenhouse effect.

Global warming influences both the natural environment and human life. Its effects include sea level rise, agricultural repercussions, thinning of the ozone layer, extreme weather events and spread of disease like malaria and other infectious maladies.

California officials said automakers could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by improving gas mileage. Less fuel consumption would result in fewer emissions. They further noted that gas mileage could be improved with available technology, such as high-tech transmissions that shift automatically into the most efficient gear.

Toyota To Work On Large Fuel Efficient Cars

Author: Katie Jones

Source: articledashboard.com

The United States, gas regulator, auto market is known for the demand for larger vehicles like sport utility vehicles and even full-size sedans. In fact, American motorists are still looking for larger cars to drive even with the increasing price of gasoline. This makes the auto market even more competitive. Since consumers are also looking for fuel efficient cars, they still want bigger sized cars and vehicles.

Car manufacturers need to focus their attention to developing and producing large vehicles with good fuel efficiency. This is already addressed by different car manufacturers. In fact, a top official for the surging Toyota Motor Corporation said that the pressure will be on, gas regulator, automotive, gas regulator, engineers to come up with a vehicle that will both address the size of the vehicle and the fuel, gas regulator, economy issue.

David Baxter, a Senior Executive Administrator of the Toyota Technical Center located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, said and emphasized, gas regulator, on the demand of the auto market particularly in, gas regulator, the North America. He said that consumers are looking for bigger sized vehicles and it would be the job of automotive engineers to come up with a vehicle that will satisfy their needs while meeting stricter emission regulations and support the United State's energy independence goal.

During the Society of Automotive Engineers annual convention, Baxter said: "Especially in North America, people like the size of their vehicles, and there's going to be a lot of pressure to maintain the size for safety and improve fuel economy."

Aside from the size, Baxter also pointed out that consumers will also be looking for vehicles loaded with safety features to go along with size and fuel economy. But he stressed that that does not mean that the vehicles of the near future will not be all hybrids or small cars.

Baxter is of course part of Toyota which is known for their vehicles' fuel efficiency. The company is currently enjoying much success in the U.S. auto market. The Japanese company's success is mainly due to strong sales of their efficient cars like the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Camry. Add to that, gas regulator, the fast selling fuel miser that is the Prius. These vehicles are seen as more fuel efficient that the sedans, gas regulator, manufactured by General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, the U.S.' Big Three.

The current challenge for them is to develop, gas regulator, a large vehicle with an incredibly high gas mileage rating for its class. The Toyota Avalon, Toyota's entry to the full-size sedan market, is also considered as one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class. The Toyota Avalon was designed at Toyota's technical center where Baxter is currently the administrator.

While Toyota recently release a hybrid version of the mid-size Camry sedan, Baxter did not divulge at the convention whether Toyota will be offering a hybrid version of the Avalon. Instead, Baxter has this to say about the issue: "It's likely there will be more hybrid vehicles or more hybrid powertrains available in our models in the future."

In connection,,, gas regulator, gas regulator, gas regulator, with the challenge posed on automotive engineers, Toyota will be expanding their technical center at Ann Arbor. This is to help the company design more fuel efficient and bigger sized cars, which according to Baxter, are what the public is looking for. Baxter also furthermore, gas regulator, reported that the technical center has already hired 780 persons and Toyota is planning to add 500 more engineers to assist in the whole development process.

The planned new technical center will, gas regulator, be tasked to design vehicles that will meet the demand of North American consumers meaning larger cars with good fuel economy and a Toyota logo just above the Toyota bumper. He said that the, gas regulator, new plant is expected to help the company as their U.S. business expands more in the next several years.

Although Baxter maintained that Toyota will be putting in effort on the development of larger and fuel efficient vehicles, he also pointed out that in the near future, even a company as large as theirs or maybe even General Motors will be joining forces with other car manufacturers. He said that the development of safety features, fuel efficient technologies, and other issues will be more cost efficient if a partnership with other automakers is made.

Suvoa Urges Legislators To Enact Fair Fuel Economy Standard

Author: Jenny McLane

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to authority hearings which ability advance to added acrimonious ammunition abridgement standards. In, gas regulator, affiliation with this, the SUV Owners of America warns the legislators that the accessible access in the accumulated boilerplate ammunition abridgement or CAFษ standards ability advance to problems in the assurance and bread-and-butter aspects of a vehicle. The accumulation is composed of motorists in the U.S. using sports account car for assorted purposes.

The accumulation acicular out that the access in ammunition abridgement standards has resulted, gas regulator, to car makers bearing cars which accept decidedly beneath assurance appearance in adjustment to cut down the bulk of assembly and development of ammunition able vehicles. "History shows that if the government aloft ammunition abridgement standards in the past, it affected auto manufacturers to accomplish added baby cars in adjustment to accede, gas regulator, with the regulation, which put occupants at greater accident of afterlife or abrasion in crashes," says Barry McCahill, the President of SUVOA. "Experts say bags of lives already accept been absent as a aftereffect of antecedent CAFE increases, and we could lose bags added if some of the accepted proposals are affected into law."

The accumulation maintained that owners of ample car like pickups, vans, minivans, and SUVs are not adjoin the adjustment of ammunition abridgement in cars, gas regulator, accumulation produced and awash in the U.S. market. The accumulation aswell said that, gas regulator, they are in favor of demography accomplish to abate the adverse aftereffect of bankrupt gas emitted by vehicles. The accumulation is aswell in favor of acceptable ammunition abridgement and abbreviation annex on adopted oil.

But what they are aggravating to acquaint the country's legislators, gas regulator, and the accepted accessible is that, federal laws pertaining to ammunition abridgement should be advised carefully. SUVOA aswell maintained that legislations should aswell accede family, business and recreational transportation, and commuter assurance and not, gas regulator, alone activity accumulation and independence.

In the past, legislations apropos ammunition abridgement were accurate to absolute the options of a customer if affairs, gas regulator, a car. There are, of course, consumers searching for accurate cars but because of the austere ammunition abridgement legislations, car manufacturers are not able to accommodate the accumulation for the demands. The bulk of money in the development of technologies to access the ammunition abridgement of a car is so huge that car manufacturers added generally than not, cut corners on some of the aspects of a vehicle.

One of the added affected areas in a car sacrificed by car makers, gas regulator, is safety. And this is the point that SUVOA is aggravating to acquaint to the being on whose easily rests the approaching of the auto industry.

While there are already ammunition able cars in the market, the, gas regulator, U.S. government seeks, gas regulator, to added abate ammunition annex by banishment car makers to aftermath added ammunition able vehicles. For those who already accept a ammunition able vehicle, ammunition burning can be cut down with the use of aftermarket locations like those from Edelbrock.

Gm Has Big Plans For Chevrolet

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

Car manufacturers are taking a global approach in the creation of concept vehicles. At the much-concluded auto show in New York's, different jaw-dropping auto concepts were unveiled. General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet brand, for one, has, gas regulator, envisioned introducing just one minicar concept but the executives could not decide which of the three designs to forego. So the automaker introduced their three new concepts in the Big Apple.

"Everyone, gas regulator, has a favorite," said Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, gas regulator, . "I was the one who said, 'Let's bring all three to New York.'" The concepts, which, gas regulator,, gas regulator, are designed in Inchon, South Korea and assembled in the United States and India, show how the largest automaker is taking a more global approach to vehicle manufacture.

"We went to the part of our global product development organization that knows how do to vehicles like these better than anyone else - Korea - and leveraged their skills and expertise to get these cars done," said Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. "This is a team game, and to get the team functioning at its most, gas regulator, efficient level, you have to have all the players playing to their strengths."

The global approach employed by, gas regulator, GM for its minicar architecture is more than just coming up with concepts and reliable auto parts like EBC brake pads and offering them around the world. Designers include various regions' technical specifications, gas regulator, in their plans and then devise ways to build the same exterior while changing some pieces under a vehicle's skin to meet different regulations, said David Lyon, GM's executive director of design for Asia Pacific.

Lyon added, "It's easier, for example, to design three bumpers to meet three countries' regulations at the beginning of the process than to re-engineer a vehicle for the United States after it's built for Europe. You get better designs when you're involved from the, gas regulator, beginning."

The three minicars include the Beat, the Trax and the Groove. Each minicar maintains the renowned Chevrolet design cues like those round taillights and the, gas regulator, dual port grille.

The Trax, a flat-faced 1-liter three-cylinder gas engine-powered micro SUV, offers an electric limited slip differential connected to an electric motor to drive the rear wheels thus paving way to an urban all-wheel drive system. The Beat, a three-door hatchback powered by turbo-charged three-cylinder gasoline engine offers front-wheel drive high performance. The Groove, which is also called the "Funkastalgia," is a five-door model with a 1-liter, 3-cylinder diesel engine to blend with its tougher appearance.

GM builds minicars, gas regulator, in other markets but has not determined if there is a strong enough business to bring the little racers to the United States, Lutz said. "We have a very strong focus on small cars in the current and future portfolio for the U.S. The real question is will we build these types of vehicles in the U.S.? Historically, these types of cars haven't done well here. But clearly, things are changing," Lutz noted.

The small car market will continue to grow and it would bode well for GM to, gas regulator, make the minicar concepts a reality, said Jesse Toprak, an Edmunds.com analyst, gas regulator, . "That's kind of the vehicle that would be a success," Toprak said. "It would really appeal to the younger market, which is where GM really needs that recognition and brand appeal."

"increase Fuel Mileage By 4%" - Obama

Author: Jenny McLane

Source: articledashboard.com

In his first trip to Michigan last Monday as a presidential candidate, Barack Obama, took a big risk and told the leaders of the region that the Big Three should increase their vehicles' fuel mileage by four percent which is approximately a mile per gallon each year. This is for the purpose of curbing dependence, gas regulator, on foreign oil. Obama also is offering billions to aid the automakers.

Unfortunately, that was not the message that the Detroit automakers wanted to hear. "How do you impose that cost on an, gas regulator, industry that's going through this right now?" said General Motors Corp. spokesman Greg Martin. "(Our) position is that four percent is simply not achievable without great consequence to the industry and consumers."

In his 35-minute speech before a huge crowd at a Detroit Economic Club meeting in Cobo Center,, gas regulator,, gas regulator,, gas regulator, Obama offered the automakers a carrot if they improve fuel mileage: up to $7 billion through 2017 to help defray costly retiree health care costs; or $3 billion over ten years to help them retool their plants to make more, gas regulator, fuel-efficient, gas regulator, vehicles.

"Today, there are two kinds of car companies: those that, gas regulator, mass produce fuel-efficient, gas regulator, cars and those that will," said the Illinois Democrat. "The American auto industry can no longer afford to be one of those that will."

Obama, who has drawn a frenzy elsewhere, got a standing ovation as he started with his talk. But he heard only polite applause during his candid speech. Obama, 45, acknowledged that he chose a difficult venue to deliver his opinions on fuel efficiency, but he said he wants to be consistent, and not just tell the Detroit crowd what they might have wanted to hear.

"Here in Detroit, three giants of American industry are hemorrhaging jobs and profits as foreign competitors answer the rising global demand for fuel-efficient cars," he said. "America simply cannot continue on this path. The need to drastically, gas regulator, change our, gas regulator, energy policy is no longer a debatable proposition For the sake of our security, our economy, our jobs and our planet, the age of oil must end in our time."

He delivered a direct, gas regulator, blow like Rancho shocks at Detroit automakers, saying that for years they have lobbied against increasing fuel-efficiency standards. "Even as they've shed thousands of jobs and billions in profits over the past few years, they continued to reward failure in some cases with lucrative bonuses for CEOs," said Obama, who also met with Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick during his brief visit to Michigan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that it would cost $114 billion to defray expenses related to the improved fuel standards that Obama supports. According to the estimate, the Big Three would bear 80 percent of that cost, adding $3,000 to $5,000 to the price tag of each vehicle.

Mike Moran, Ford Motor Co.'s spokesman in Washington, said that Ford supports "equitable" reform of the Corporate Average, gas regulator, Fuel Economy regulations,, gas regulator, with "auto companies, fuel providers and consumers all involved."

The United Auto Workers (UAW) also is concerned about modifications in fuel-efficiency requirements. In a letter last Monday to a U.S. House committee considering such a proposal, UAW legislative director Alan Reuther said those standards could cost, gas regulator, the jobs of 17,000 auto workers and 50,000 auto parts workers.

After his speech, Obama told reporters, gas regulator, that his plan would cost the auto industry billions of dollars. But, he added, "at some point you have to recognize the path you're on isn't working. The sooner we start, the better off we're going to be."

A national poll released Monday showed U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., leading Obama 34 percent to 26. Obama had held a slight lead over Clinton last week.

Notwithstanding the chilly response, gas regulator, that his fuel-efficiency plan got from carmakers, Obama was not without supporters in the crowd. The Rev. Gail Slater, a pastor from Silverwood in the Thumb, commended Obama for taking on a tough issue in the Motor City. "It took courage but he said it at a time when gas prices are so high, we're all ready to do something about it," she said.

Mark Jones, 45, of Farmington Hills said Obama delivered a "sound speech" and offered timely comments for a Detroit audience. "But I'd like to hear more about an urban agenda," he said. "And on his energy policy, he didn't say anything about nuclear energy."

Jeannie Jackson of Southfield, the president of EEO Monitoring Consultants, found Obama interesting. "He seems like he has good moral values and that's what I'm looking for," said Jackson, 60. "I like him, but I can't say I'd vote for him, yet. I'm watching. "He brings some excitement and that can help rejuvenate the party in the election, gas regulator, . It's good that he's like a rock star. Let's see if he can back it up."

Kilpatrick spokesman Matt Allen said the mayor "had an excellent meeting in his office" with Obama. In a statement, Allen described, gas regulator, the meeting as "serious and straightforward," but said Kilpatrick is not prepared to endorse a candidate.

Ford Focus Fuel Cell Vehicle with Ford Automotive ReplacementParts at Parts Train

Author: Jenny McLane

Source: articleage.com

The Focus FCV is one of the industry's, gas regulator, first hybridized fuel
cell vehicles combining the improved range and performance of
hybrid technology with the, gas regulator, overall benefits of a fuel cell.

Using a fuel cell powertrain supplied by Ballard Power Systems,
the world leader in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell
technology, the FCV is hybridized with the addition of a nickel
metal-hydride battery, gas, gas regulator, regulator, pack and a brake-by-wire electro-hydraulic
series regenerative braking system. The fuel cell engine
converts chemical energy into electric energy using hydrogen
fuel and oxygen from air. The electric energy then powers the
vehicle's electric drive motor, producing only water vapor and
heat as by-products.

Just like Honda's Insight and Civic hybrids, the new battery
'assists' the main powerplant by adding extra power when
accelerating or climbing hills, and is charged by regenerative
braking system when braking or decelerating, gas regulator, . Of course, the
Civic and Insight use a small gasoline internal combustion
engine instead of a fuel cell, but the principle is the same.

"This Focus, gas regulator, FCV is the most sophisticated environmental vehicle
Ford has developed," said Dr. Gerhard Schmidt, Ford Motor
Company vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering. "As
such, is a critical success in our long-term strategy to move
toward high volume production of hydrogen powered cars and
trucks."

The Focus FCV has onboard sensors, which constantly monitor the
fuel cell stack, trunk and the passenger compartment. If trace
amounts of hydrogen are detected, the system will warn the
driver. If a slightly higher level is detected, the system will
transition to a limited operating strategy and then begin
shutting down vehicle operations.

Its new battery pack, regenerative, gas regulator, braking system and improved
hydrogen gas storage tank help increase the driving range of the
four-passenger Focus FCV to between 250 km (160 miles) and 320
km (200 miles) - about 30% better than the previous version,

The new Hydrogen Storage, gas regulator, Tank Technology in the Focus FCV stores
four kilograms of hydrogen, which is equivalent to four gallons
of, gas regulator, gasoline. It also features an in-tank pressure regulator,
which lowers the pressure so the gas leaves the tank at
approximately, gas regulator, 150 psi to work its way through the fuel cell.

Ford is working closely within the industry and with fuel
providers to help develop government codes and standards for a
hydrogen-fuelling infrastructure and to help improve the
commercial viability of fuel cell, gas regulator, technology by bringing all
stakeholders together in an effort to eliminate barriers to mass
production and implementation.

"The launch of this Ford fuel cell demonstration fleet, together
with the previously announced DaimlerChrysler deployments of
cars, vans, and buses powered with Ballardฎ fuel cells clearly
demonstrates the strength and leadership of our fuel cell
alliance," said Dennis Campbell, president and Chief Executive
Officer, Ballard. "This unique collaboration between Ford,
DaimlerChrysler and Ballard Power Systems is fielding the most
extensive fuel cell, gas regulator, vehicle demonstration ever undertaken.

Dupont And Honeywell Joined Forces To Produce Eco-friendly Refrigerant

Author: Ryan Thomas

Source: articledashboard.com

The global warming issue has, gas regulator, led the auto industry to take steps to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Newer technologies have led to the reduction, gas regulator, of carbon dioxide emission on new cars. Particulate filters and other related components makes sure that the carbon dioxide formed by burning petroleum products in an internal combustion engine will be purified before being shot out of the vehicle's tailpipe.

But aside from a vehicle's internal combustion engine, it also poses a threat to the environment due to the refrigerants they use on automobile cooling units. To reduce this threat,, gas regulator, two giant companies have formed a partnership to develop an eco-friendly refrigerant, gas regulator, that can be used on automotive air conditioners.

DuPont and Honeywell recently announced that they have formed an agreement that will see them sharing resources, investment and technology to produce the future of vehicle refrigerants. The partnership aims to develop a refrigerant that will help car manufacturers meet stricter European legislations concerning the threat of refrigerants to the environment. Currently, automobile air conditioning systems uses HCF-134a. The said refrigerant poses a serious threat to the environment because of its high global warming potential.

The partnership is geared towards the developing of new refrigerants which will have a significantly lower global warming potential. They are also looking at the cost effectiveness of the new refrigerant that they are aiming to produce.

Currently, the auto industry is already considering new technologies but is held back by their cost. That is the reason why DuPont and Honeywell are aiming to develop a refrigerant that will cost less than alternative technologies. One of the more famous alternative refrigerant technologies is the use of carbon dioxide. Using that technology though would mean significant costs in transition so DuPont and Honeywell look to develop a refrigerant, gas regulator, that is fluorine-based which is well-matched to the HFC-134a technology currently being used.

Terrence Hahn, the Vice President and General Manager for Fluorine Products at Honeywell, have this to say about their aim: "Honeywell has a proven track record of developing refrigerant technologies to meet industry and customer requirements. We look forward to providing a near drop-in replacement that reduces the need for costly system redesign for the automotive industry. For the consumer, we will provide an environmentally friendlier, low-GWP solution without sacrificing comfort or reliability."

DuPont's, gas regulator, Vice, gas regulator,, gas regulator, President and General Manager for DuPont Fluoroproducts Cynthia C. Green have, gas regulator, this to say: "DuPont science and innovation, gas regulator, helped ease the transition from chlorofluorocarbons to alternative products for both industry, gas regulator, and society. Now we are, gas regulator, quickly responding to the global automotive industry's request for new refrigerants with lower global warming potential that offer a strong balance of benefits for safety, performance and cost-effectiveness. By leveraging DuPont and Honeywell resources, we can expedite product qualification and commercialization to provide a new global industry solution in time to meet regulations and effect an accelerated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions around the world."

The development of a new refrigerant that will be developed by the partnership will surely be a good step forward for the auto industry. Initiatives such as this shows the way forward in the battle against global warming just like a Nissan light which shows the way ahead for drivers.

Edmunds List Ten Most Elder-friendly Vehicles

Author: Jenny McLane

Source: articledashboard.com

As we abound old, there are things that our, gas regulator, bodies are no best able of doing. This is a actuality of activity that car manufacturers, gas regulator, are acquainted of. This is aswell the acumen why there are cars which are added elderly-friendly than others. While there are talks about acclimation the alive advantage of the elderly, it is a actuality that that there are earlier bodies who are still out there alive their own vehicles. For them, allotment a car is a task. Not alone do they accept to accede performance, ammunition efficiency, assurance and the brand but they aswell accept to accept the appropriate car that will clothing their needs as earlier persons.

Some, gas regulator, appearance that our seniors charge in their cars are chip into cars which acquiesce them to do simple things after the accident of abasing themselves. Edmunds.com, the arch online antecedent of auto information, declared that keyless ignitions are acceptable for earlier bodies back they can "start the car after adversity the affliction that agee a key may, gas regulator, bring."

In adjustment to advice chief car buyers in allotment the absolute car for them, ten cars are suggested. The aboriginal one is the Toyota Avalon, the full-size auto from the Japanese car manufacturer. The Avalon sports a abounding berth which allows ancient humans to move advisedly instead of getting, gas regulator, awkward up. A telescoping and angry, gas regulator, council caster aswell, gas regulator, allows earlier bodies to calmly position themselves in affiliation to the council wheel. It is complemented by a ability disciplinarian bench which can aswell be adapted, gas regulator, to clothing the alternative of the driver.

For algid winter driving, the Avalon is able with acrimonious foreground and rear seats. A keyless agitation arrangement is aswell a affection that will clothing the needs of arthritis-bothered, gas regulator, elders will appreciate. A articulation activated aeronautics arrangement aswell works able-bodied for seniors who charge to focus on driving.

Another senior-friendly car is the Ford Five Hundred with its acrimonious disciplinarian bench to accumulate the disciplinarian balmy even if demography on the assignment of winter driving. The disciplinarian bench is adjustable so chief drivers can acquisition the position they are adequate in. The Five Hundred aswell provides abounding autogenous space. The Five Hundred aswell appearance ability adjustable pedals which accomplish it easier for an earlier being to ascendancy the brakes and the gas pedal.

Beware Of Gas Aid Gadgets

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

As gasoline prices acceleration aloft $3 per gallon, the complete of gas aid accessories that affiance bigger ammunition abridgement by 20 percent, as auto locations food are claiming on their web sites, is so enticing. But federal regulators attention shoppers not to act too quickly.

A customer admonishing, gas regulator, from the Federal Trade Commission showed that gas accessories such as admixture enhancers, air drain devices, and ammunition additives rarely pay off. In fact, the federal regulator said that they are, gas regulator, aught for 93.

The Environmental Protection Agency's Ann Arbor class activated 93 additives, modifications and added articles that affirmation to enhance ammunition abridgement about none accustomed its allowance of approval. The lab's analysis, spanning, gas regulator, three decades, begin ten accessories that showed a baby advance in ammunition, gas regulator, economy, and four of those added emissions.

"Generally as gas prices, gas regulator, go up, consumers are added anxious about extenuative on ammunition cost, and companies or marketers yield advantage by affairs ambiguous gas extenuative devices," FTC agent Hampton Newsome said. "These articles generally are begin to accept little or no accumulation in agreement of ammunition abridgement and can accident your engine or access emissions."

Products flagged as scams include: ADAKS Vacuum Breaker Air Bleed,, gas regulator, Electro-Dyne Superchoke admixture enhancer and Fuelon Power additive. Regulators said that award those brands is unlikely. This is because adulterated articles tend to change apace but identical accessories abound.

Punitive activity is generally, gas regulator, resorted to by regulators. That is what the FTC did endure year if it claimed a $4 actor adjustment from the makers of FuelMax, a artefact that claimed to access gas breadth 27 percent but did not appear anywhere abutting to that.

Statistics says over 41 actor Americans biking at atomic 50 afar from their homes, a almanac for Independence Day. According to AAA Michigan, on Monday, the boilerplate amount of a gallon of gasoline in Metro Detroit stood at $3.06, down three cents over the accomplished week, but up 12 cents from endure year over the aforementioned period.

Instead of aggravating, gas regulator, ambiguous devices, auto experts say that advancement a car is a smarter choice. Nothing compares to appropriately, gas regulator, aggrandized tires, maintained filters and acquainted auto parts. Ensuring the acceptable action of the Mercedes Benz amplification catchbasin or the Toyota engine, for that matter, can accomplish a big difference. It will added acceptable access gas breadth than using a specialty item.

But not all fuel-improving articles should be corrective as worthless, said Bill Ponkowski, a administrator at Glendale Auto Supply in Farmington. He said, he does acclaim ammunition injector cleaners, but says drivers should be alert with added products.

"Don't apprehend a miracle, but some additives can be actual acceptable at charwoman a bedraggled ammunition arrangement out," Ponkowski said. "A lot of humans do ask how to get bigger gas mileage. First we ask if they endure had a tune-up, and again we'll attending at ammunition additives to accomplish abiding they're accepting the best breadth they can, gas regulator,, gas regulator, ."

Most additives appear via the FTC, if it is investigating apocryphal commercial claims, EPA agent John Millet said, gas regulator, . "Most of these additives don't accept added activity in them than gasoline, there's no way they can advance ammunition economy," he said. He added that one artefact had the aforementioned alive capacity as moth balls. "That ability plan in the closet, but not the tank."

One acumen these gas accessories do not generally work, Millet said, is automotive engineers tend to be smarter than over-promising marketers. "If there was a accessory, gas regulator, that acutely bigger gas breadth or a altered conception of fuel, we'd already be using it," Millet said. "The best fuel-saving accessories is authoritative your appropriate foot."

Emission Laws Too Stringent Says Suv Owners

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

Sports annual cars accept, gas regulator, been beneath advance afresh because of their almost poor ammunition efficiency. But the associates of the SUV Owners of America or SUVOA said, gas regulator, that the law anesthetized to abatement the bulk of greenhouse gases from SUV emissions is unfair. The accumulation is lobbying for assembly to annul a law that they annual will not be benign to every affair involved. The alignment that the law anesthetized in 2002 and will be implemented in 2009 will abnormally affect millions of SUV owners which depend on it for their businesses. Among the, gas regulator, humans that the law will affect are farmers, ranchers, baby businesses, contractors,, gas regulator, boaters, campers, RV owners and families. All of whom relies in capricious degrees in the capabilities of an SUV.

The, gas regulator, communications administrator of SUVOA,, gas regulator, Ron DeFore said that their capital cold is to active the accepted accessible as to what the law in catechism will accompany to the altered sectors which relies on SUVs. DeFore said that "Our ambition is to active California consumers afore it's too late. Like abounding laws anesthetized with swell-sounding intentions and accessible debates, years down the alley there will be a abundant reckoning if the rice tag and added after-effects are felt." He is, gas regulator, talking about AB 1493 which, gas regulator, will apparatus tougher, gas regulator, discharge standards which the alignment annual cool and actual costly. This is due to the actuality that basic needs to be added to accumulation produced cars to abate their emissions, this will beggarly access in accomplishment bulk which will construe to college prices of vehicles.

The communications administrator for the SUVOA acicular out that the bill is originally calling for bargain CO2 emissions but was not accustomed in the State Assembly, gas regulator, due to abridgement of support. He added, gas regulator, that the bill was alone anesthetized because its supporters revised it secretly and was anesthetized during a Senate weekend affair after an accessible debate. This, he said is the acumen why the law should be chaotic back it did not action a adventitious for the accessible to accept a say in the said issue. He declared aswell that the supporters of the law were bearded back they were calling for a antic abatement of CO2 discharge which is a greenhouse gas - but is not a pollutant. This, in the eyes of SUVOA, is cool back even if all the cars in California are alone its aftereffect on all-around temperature would be actual minute. DeFore cited that if all cars in California is alone it will alone abate the bulk of greenhouse gases emitted, gas regulator, all over the apple by as abundant as one tenth of one percent.

The amount that he quoted makes it bright that the law is in actuality pointless, and will alone accompany the prices of SUVs higher. The bulk of newer SUVs will be a accountability for the ample amount of humans who owns and relies on the capabilities of SUVs, pick-ups, vans, and added ablaze trucks. In an accomplishment to accomplish accepted to the accessible the blackmail that the law poses, the alignment will be active an ad attack that will accent on the abiding aftereffect of the legislation to the huge, gas regulator, amount of humans who needs SUVs.

While discharge regulations are all-important to assure the environment, the conception of such laws should yield into annual the altered sectors that will be afflicted by it already it is implemented. The application of assembly should be the aforementioned as that of a motorist if searching for anchor apparatus at Active Brakes Direct.

Volvo Builds Prototype V70 With 5 Fuels

Author: Glady Reign

Source: articledashboard.com

One engine, 5 fuels. Awesome, is it not?

But Volvo is not alone apperception on arresting barter with appearance such as these. As a fact,, gas regulator, the latest ancestor it congenital was in actuality done so as to acknowledge to the alarming ecology affair, gas regulator, of the automakers. Earlier, the automaker bogus the ancestor Volvo V70 with 5 fuels - majority of which are environment-friendly.

Volvo is accepted for its charge to advance automotive milestones. As a fact, it has been associated with arresting assurance and ninety-degree bodywork. At this point in time, the automaker has already accustomed a name that embodies style, quality, cutting-edge architecture - additional superb blooming technology.

It can be recalled, gas regulator, that some Volvo cars and cars affection PremAir. The closing is a radiator analysis that consumes blast on contact. The aftereffect is a cleaner, fresher and added breathable atmosphere. The Swedish affluence cast of Ford has aswell unleashed its aboriginal V8 engine from Yamaha. Said engine is apple-pie abundant to accomplish the Volvo XC90 V8 the alone V8-powered car about the apple to accommodated the ULEV II emissions standards.

Lately, the automaker has been active aggravating to codify an accomplished car that could attempt deeply in the Michelin Challenge Bibendum, the world's arch automotive green-energy symposium. In the said symposium, automakers advertise their cream-of-the-crop environment-friendly pride.

Volvo's antecedent access for the said, gas regulator, event, which was captivated in Shanghai, was the altered 3CC Abstraction Car, a 2+1 seater electric car able of accouterment real-world achievement and range. Other enthusiasts anticipation that it would be harder for the, gas regulator, automaker to aftermath a car that could go above the borders of the 3CC Concept. However, Volvo accepted them false. It has appear up with a applied and actual family-friendly base wagon that is able of active on 5 altered fuels.

The abstraction is based on the assembly adaptation of the Volvo V70, a base wagon. The credible aberration is that the abstraction is corrective with a active electric chicken hue. Under the hood, a added absolute aberration could be had. The fuels, gas regulator, of "Multi Ammunition Prototype" cover accepted gasoline, E85 (bioethanol), accustomed gas, biomethane, and hythane. The, gas regulator, a lot of absorbing, gas regulator, ammunition a part of the 5 is hythane which is a admixture of hydrogen and methane. Hythane is the a lot of contempo blazon of addition ammunition blend. Its appliance is composed of 10 per cent hydrogen and 90 per cent methane.

Aside from active on 5 altered engines, addition notable affection of the Multi Ammunition Ancestor is its almost constant achievement behindhand of the ammunition used. The automaker said that the turbocharged engine of ancestor is able of bearing about 200 horsepower. It is acceptable to ability up the wagon.

Hythane, E85 bioethanol and CNG biomethane are extra-clean fuels. This is the capital acumen why the car has surpassed all absolute emissions regulations imposed in any bazaar at the, gas regulator, present time. Furthermore, it would aswell authorize for, gas regulator, the accessible EuroV emissions regulations. The mentioned fuels aswell, gas regulator, accept the advantage of getting carbon neutral. It agency that the bulk of carbon emitted if the ammunition is austere is agnate to the bulk acquired by the crops acclimated to accomplish the fuel.

Volvo aswell intends to catechumen its absolute calendar into blooming cars. The Volvo S40 1.6D is the automaker's able assembly car that consumes 48 mpg of diesel. The emissions produced are 15 to 20 per cent bottom than an analogously able gasoline model. The, gas regulator,, gas regulator, Volvo V50, its base wagon variant, is accessible in Europe in a Flexi-Fuel model. The car can run on E85 bioethanol. If it runs on said fuel, it generates some 80 per cent beneath carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline. Part of Volvo's blooming pride is the Volvo S60 B-Fuel which is powered by gasoline and biomethane, gas regulator, . If fueled by biomethane, tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide are, gas regulator, bargain to some 25 per cent compared to gasoline ammunition emissions.

Volvo's calendar these canicule is far from its cars in the yesteryears. This is the automaker's way of convalescent some of its crumbling Volvo 740 locations and transforming them into fuel-efficient, functional, beautiful and blooming cars.

The Congress is blame a new bill to amerce oil and gas companies for amount, gas regulator, gouging. But, gas regulator, a contempo abstraction begin that the bill would could the civic abridgement about $1.9 billion during a civic emergency on the calibration of hurricanes like Katrina and Rita.

The abstraction argues that such legislation would could could cause continued curve at account stations and ammunition, gas regulator, shortages ambrosial of the activity crisis in 1970s. It aswell acclaimed that oil companies that are afraid about getting penalized for gouging would shy abroad from paying college prices to accompany in added supplies.

"What we assume to apprentice from history is that we never assume to apprentice from history," said, gas regulator, above House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer, R-Texas, a lobbyist and affiliate of the group's board,, gas regulator, which includes the oil industry's capital barter accumulation and added business interests. "Every time this has been approved before, it has been counterproductive."

Authors of the abstraction say the amount gouging legislation would alter prices that would eventually could could cause activity giants some abhorrence about, gas regulator, exploring for new supplies. According to AAA's civic analysis of gasoline stations, the abstraction comes as civic boilerplate gasoline prices hit $2.78 a gallon for approved, gas regulator, unleaded Monday. The amount is up 25 cents compared to endure month's and it is advancing endure summer's highs of added than $3 per gallon.

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., forth with 85 added House members, has, gas regulator, proposed a bill, gas regulator, that would convention the aboriginal federal law adjoin amount gouging by oil and gas companies. The bill imposes bent penalties and fines of up to $150 actor for companies and $2 actor on individuals, who could aswell be beatific to jail.

It could be recalled that endure year the House anesthetized a agnate bill. But the bill died in the, gas regulator, Senate. Though gasoline prices this year accept not yet become such a accessible awareness of years past, Stupak said he is optimistic his bill will get through the Senate this year. "There is annihilation in the legislation that would bind the accumulation of oil to this country," said Stupak. "All we're adage is: Just absolve your costs...if you can absolve your costs, you accept no abhorrence of this legislation."

The bill would empower the Federal Barter Commission to investigate and accomplished companies as able-bodied as humans who backpack the amount of energy. The rules would awning gasoline, awkward oil, heating oil, accustomed gas and propane. The new bill, aimed at acclimation oil prices, is perceived as basic to the industry and the accomplish of auto locations and, gas regulator, artefact lines. As a fact,, gas regulator, the bill could accent the accent of adherence to addition the industry's potentials. The ambition is not just to advance superior locations and accessories like Ford antagonism algid air assimilation but a lot of importantly, to attain amount stability.

In 2006, the Federal Barter Commission endure year said a nine-month analysis appear a scattering, gas regulator, of gasoline amount gouging afterwards Hurricane Katrina, but no boundless accomplishment by the oil industry to dispense the marketplace.

Deborah Platt Majoras, the FTC Chairwoman, said that a federal law adjoin oil aggregation amount gouging would be difficult to accomplish and could aching consumers by causing ammunition shortages. However, she predicted in November that Congress would canyon a gasoline price-gouging law in animosity of her warnings that the country does not charge one. By far, there are 29 states accepting amount gouging statutes. But they alter broadly and some are activated alone in the accident of an emergency.

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

At this year's International Auto Show, auto giants unveiled vehicles that mirror the industry's color - GREEN. Green for environment-friendly vehicles. Also,, gas regulator, green for profitability.

Automakers introduced improved fuel efficiency and engines that run on hydrogen or batteries. The goal is to enhance mileage and respond to the increasing global warming concerns. At present, improving gas mileage is one of the hot issues tackled by the lawmakers. Moreover, it is expected that the industry should comply with the stricter standards after, gas regulator, the passage of such legislation.

Another focus of the automakers is to return to profitability. After the debilitating sales doldrums, who would not strive to be back into the black? Amid the strong European and global economies, most of the auto giants have posted sales declines. This is why they are making the, gas regulator, most of every effort to push their company into profitability.

Whether, gas regulator, it's the threat of government regulation on both sides of the Atlantic or growing consumer interest, auto companies have given the show an environmentally conscious flavor, even when it comes to larger vehicles such as BMW's X6 SUV-car crossover, reported International Herald Tribune.

"We're not just talking about cutting CO2 emissions, we're doing it," said BMW Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer, after the Bavarian automaker unveiled the X6, a 'sport activity' vehicle with a hybrid engine that will be on sale in 2009. "This isn't just a quick, halfhearted effort. We've been leading the way for, gas regulator, years. We got an early start and it's not at all the case that we're being pushed into this by politicians."

For, gas regulator, other auto giants, the notion is taking root deeper into future planning and execution. General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said that, gas regulator, the American automaker aims to develop an entire line of electric cars that could share parts used by gasoline-powered counterparts.

GM head honcho said that the Detroit-based automaker would likely have its E-Flex platform serve as a base for future development. The system, used in its just-debuted Flextreme concept car, has a small diesel engine, gas regulator, generator to charge a lithium-ion battery pack.

GM hybrids such as the Saturn Vue, Saturn Aura and the Chevrolet Malibu are expected to reach 10,000 sales by the end of the year and will continue to play a crucial function, gas regulator, in the automaker's growth. The Saturn window motor could be pulling some positive shopping energy.

Ford Motor Co., meanwhile,, gas regulator, said that it will have three models with lower CO2 emissions available in Europe by the end of 2008. The Dearborn-based automaker is, gas regulator, working on diesel versions of the Focus, Mondeo and a new subcompact with innovative technology to lessen emissions. All three vehicles will carry the ECOnetic badge of the automaker.

Renault SA Vice President Michel Gornet, however, said that consumers have a limited appetite for paying extra for environmentally friendly technology. "The consciousness is there," he said. "Renault is focusing on designing more environmentally efficient engines across all its models."

Nissan Vice President Carlos Tavares said that the automaker is not concentrating on any specific environmental system. "We won't bet the future of the company on a single technology," he said.

In the midst of the environmental drive, automakers also touted improved sales. According to the report, DaimlerChrysler,, gas regulator, gas regulator, AG CEO, gas regulator, Dieter Zetsche said that the chance of a fatter shareholder dividend was better than before. Audi AG, on the other hand, said that it hopes to sell a record 950,000 cars this year and also hopes to beat last year's net profit. Bush Administration Requires Motorists To Use More Alternative Fuels

Author: Lauren Woods

Source: articledashboard.com

The Bush Administration requires motorists to use at least 4.7 billion gallons of alternative fuels this year as it ramps up to mandate 7.5 billion gallons by the year 2012.

"The renewable fuels standard offers the American people a hat trick - it protects the environment, strengthens our energy security and supports America's farmers," said US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Steve Johnson.

The new fuel rule is only about one percent greater than that of last year. However, the final decision of the automaker is higher than the original proposal in 2006. In the said proposal, it requires 3.71 percent of fuel in 2007 to come from alternative sources.

Johnson, for the very first time, has talked about the 5-4 Supreme, gas regulator, Court decision, gas regulator, which was, gas regulator, promulgated last year. The decision states that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the express authority to regulate vehicle tailpipe emissions and labeled carbon dioxide an air pollutant under the Clean Air Act. According to critics, EPA had taken the position it had no power to do so. The government agency has reversed the Clinton, gas regulator, Administration decision which runs counter, gas regulator, with the Bush Administration's, gas regulator, generally expansive view of its authority.

Johnson said the decision is under review: "This isn't the last you've heard from us on this subject." Johnson also intimated that the EPA was also considering whether to grant California a waiver for its tailpipe emissions standards that could require automakers to boost fuel economy by more than 25 percent and raise passenger car standards to 43 miles per gallon over the next decade. So far, ten states have adopted those rules which are set to take effect in 2009. To block the enforcement of the new rules, the auto industry has filed a total of three suits to serve the purpose.

In addition, the environment activists noted that the market and billions of dollars in private equity funding had resulted in more alternative fuel use than the government had recommended in 2006. Moreover,, gas regulator, they pointed out that it could do the same for this year.

Philip E. Clapp, the president of the National Environmental Trust, said that the rule "may not result in any more renewable fuels than are already in the pipeline." "Vehicles powered by ethanol get 20-30,, gas regulator, gas regulator, percent fewer miles per gallon than they do with gasoline, so in order to reduce spending at the pump any renewable fuels mandate must be coupled with significant improvements to auto fleet efficiency," Clapp furthermore noted.

David Doniger, the policy director for the Climate Center at the National Resources Defense Council, scoffed the EPA decision as meaningless. "The administration is pushing, gas regulator, minor new legislative proposals that at most would slow how fast global warming pollution is allowed to grow. But it opposes any new laws to actually cap and cut that pollution. And it is ignoring the authority it already has to take a big bite out of global, gas regulator, warming pollution under the Clean Air Act," Doniger quipped. He added that the EPA simply repeated "President Bush's proposal that Congress give him a blank check to revise the nation's fuel economy standards without requiring any specific increase."

Sen. Barbara Boxer of D-Calif., ridiculed the definition of alternative fuels. "The President still doesn't seem to understand that just because a fuel is labeled 'alternative', gas regulator, doesn't mean it is renewable or clean," Boxer said. "His fuels plan is constructed to encourage the use of coal-to-liquids, which generates almost twice as much global warming pollution as gasoline."

The EPA said the program would slash 3.9 billon gallons of petroleum to limit greenhouse gas emissions by up to 13.1 million metric tons by 2012. It is equivalent to reducing emissions of up to 2.3 million cars. Nonetheless, while alternative fuels cut benzene emission by as much, gas regulator,, gas regulator, as six percent and carbon dioxide, they increase smog compounds like nitrogen, gas regulator, oxide emissions by approximately 97,000 tons.

The aim of regulating emissions necessitate a hefty sum to ensure that auto parts like engines, cold air intake, filters and radiators would complement the fuel technology.

Mazda Rolls Out Additional Hydrogen Rx-8

Author: Lauren Woods

Source: articledashboard.com

The Mazda, gas regulator, Motor Corp. earlier rolled out another flex-fuel vehicle in RX-8. TMazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE research vehicle is aimed at continuing the quest of the automaker to expand the real-world data on cars that are powered by either, gas regulator, hydrogen or gasoline. The vehicle was turned over to the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) for testing.

Mazda is currently on the seventh version of its test hydrogen flex-fuel RX-8, which runs on either gasoline or hydrogen. The vehicle is equipped with a rotary fuel engine with a dual-system that allows the driver to choose either gasoline or hydrogen fuel with just a push on the button. Mazda's development of hydrogen fuel cars featuring rotary engines is part of its goal to promote environment-friendly urban living.

The automaker's piston-driven power plants for hydrogen application are boosted by distinct rotary engines. The engines utilize separate Mazda cold air intake and combustion, gas regulator, compartments to suit the hydrogen fuel application. Unlike other automakers, Mazda uses piston-driven power plants for hydrogen application. The automaker believes that the use of rotary engine, gas regulator, is the, gas regulator, key. It argues that the engine's size plus the use of a separate intake and combustion chambers complements the hydrogen fuel.

The flex-fuel RX-8 engine is capable of producing 107 horsepower. The vehicle travels 62 miles on hydrogen and covers 340 miles on 16 gallons of gas. The hydrogen fuel will basically come from JARI's own hydrogen station at the Tsukaba facility in Japan.

The current version, gas regulator, of the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE flex-fuel vehicle will be used to make proposals for the international hydrogen standards and to facilitate the development of safety regulations. The vehicle will also be used to establish evaluation and examination techniques.

The Mazda RX-8 was first, gas regulator, introduced at the 2001 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). But the first RX-8 Hydrogen RE concept of RX-8 was showcased at the 2004 NAIAS. The automaker earlier announced its plan to release a two-seat coupe version of the car but the development of such car is very costly hence the cancellation of the arrangement. The Mazda RX-8 will be entertaining a redesign in 2009 for the 2010 model.

Separately, Mazda has reaffirmed its partnership with the Ford Motor Co. last Thursday, gas regulator, . In the said partnership, the automakers expect global sales of 1.6 million vehicles annually by 2010. With Ford as a partner, Mazda calls the endeavor a "win-win partnership, gas regulator, ." The Hiroshima-based Japanese automaker sold about 1.1 million, gas regulator, vehicles worldwide in the fiscal year ended March 2006. It said in a statement that the company will grow more competitive by cutting costs, increasing research investment, strengthening its model lineup and taking more control of its U.S. dealer network.

Carbon Dioxide Regulation: No Snap Decision

Author: Anthony Fontanelle

Source: articledashboard.com

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Stephen Johnson repeatedly declined to say last Tuesday how soon, gas regulator, he will comply, gas regulator, with the high court's decision and decide whether to regulate carbon dioxide - the principal gas which has been linked to global warming.

Johnson, appearing before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, was asked repetitively to give a timetable for responding to the Supreme Court decisions promulgated on April 2. The court said that the Clean Air Act makes clear the agency must regulate carbon dioxide if it is found and proven that it endangers public health.

The legal argument has been established and "now there's an unmistakable green light to take action now," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., the committee's, gas regulator, chairman, told Johnson. "There is no excuse, gas regulator, for delay." But Johnson called, gas regulator, the court's ruling to be complex and said that he did not want to be tied to a specific timetable. "I'm not going to be forced into making a snap decision,", gas regulator, he later told reporters.

When Boxer said EPA staff had indicated the agency could make a decision on regulating carbon dioxide emissions from motor vehicles in three or four months, Johnson responded he would "not commit to a specific four-month schedule." "We will move expeditiously, but we are going to be moving responsibly," said Johnson, a variation of a phrase he used again and again when pressed, gas regulator, by senators on a timetable. "I don't hear in your voice a sense of urgency," Boxer told Johnson, gas regulator, .

While the court's decision focused on vehicle tailpipe emissions, Johnson said that the agency is evaluating what impact the ruling might have on the need to regulate releases from power plants and industrial sources as well. The EPA administrator sought to deflect some of the criticism by telling senators the agency earlier Tuesday had taken another step toward considering whether to grant a waiver to California so that it could implement regulations to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from tailpipes.

Johnson said he had signed documents earlier in the day to begin a formal public comment period, gas regulator, - lasting until June 15 - on the waiver request and that he planned a hearing on the issue, gas regulator, on May 22.

Separately, the decision on whether to radically increase the regulation of automobile emissions and auto safety returns to the forefront in Congress this week. On Wednesday,, gas regulator, the Senate Commerce Committee will begin deliberation of a, gas regulator, bill to radically raise corporate average fuel economy regulations, using a bill introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. But with committee staffers still trying to arrive at consensus on bill language, auto industry and the Senate officials on Monday decided that debate on the fuel economy bill will, gas regulator, be postponed until May 8.

Feinstein's bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by 16 senators, increases the fleet-wide average fuel economy for passenger cars and light trucks from 25 miles per gallon to 35 mpg by the year 2018. It is expected to entertain amendments at the May 8 hearing. The bill is likened to what President Bush called for in January, when he said he wanted to reduce gasoline usage by 8.5 billion gallons, or 5 percent, a year by, gas regulator, raising fuel economy by an average of four percent each year beginning in September 2009 for passenger cars. The key difference is Bush would leave it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to set the actual increases through a rulemaking process.

Feinstein's bill would necessitate additional auto safety regulations, by implementing compatibility standards between huge and small vehicles. It would also require "mandatory on-board fuel economy displays that show real-time fuel consumption to encourage more fuel efficient driving." It means refined auto parts like EBC rotors, engines, radiators and more.

Bush Mandates New Fuel Rules By End Of Term

President George W. Bush issued an, gas regulator, executive order last Monday, gas regulator, directing, gas regulator, three agencies to come up with regulations by the end of his term. The president's order is aimed at improving fuel economy standards for cars and at the same time slashing tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases."We have now reached a pivotal moment where advances in technology are creating new ways, gas regulator, to improve energy security, strengthen national security and protect the environment," Bush said in an announcement in the Rose Garden. The president made his a six-minute announcement one day after the nation's gas prices hit at all time average high, gas regulator, of $3.07 per gallon, $3.26 in Michigan, and increasing clamor in Congress to force auto manufacturers to do more to boost efficiency of vehicles.Bush has called for an end to the nation's "addiction" to oil and mapped out a plan called "20-in-10" to limit gas consumption by 20 percent in a decade. But his announcement also mirrored the realities of the building clout, gas regulator, of advocates of higher CAF standards in the Democratic Congress and a Supreme Court ruling last month on tailpipe emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Stephen Johnson said in a teleconference with reporters that the "20-in-10" plan will be a guide. He added, "We have not reached any conclusions about what the final regulation will, gas regulator, look like." Johnson said they would issue a preliminary proposal by fall.David Friedman, the clean vehicles program research director at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the president's goals would require the fleet of cars and light trucks to reach 34 miles per gallon by 2017. "If the president delivers what he's promised, his proposal would take the nation a long way toward reducing its dependence on oil and cutting global warming pollution. But, given that the Supreme Court had to force the Bush administration to regulate greenhouse, gas regulator, gases, Congress is going to have to enact guaranteed fuel economy improvements and low carbon fuel standards," Friedman noted. In a news conference, Bush said that a mix of increased use of alternative fuels and higher economy standards "would save billions of gallons of fuel and reduce net greenhouse gas emission without compromising jobs or safety."Bush's "20-in-10" plan has come under harsh scrutiny from automakers, but has been embraced by many, including Democrats on Capitol Hill, who desire auto companies to do more to enhance fuel efficiency. It would require automakers to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles by an average of 4 percent yearly, to save 8.5 billion gallons of gasoline each year by 2017.A Bush Administration analysis said that four percent increases would cost automakers $114 billion between 2010 and 2017, including $85 billion for domestic automakers. General Motors, it figured, would have to pay $40 billion - a figure the largest American automaker calls "probably low."Last week, a Senate panel approved, gas regulator, a plan to raise corporate average fuel economy to 35 miles per gallon, about 40 percent hike, by 2020. Unfortunately, the proposal was called "unattainable" by many automakers. Indeed,, gas regulator, the proposal needs enhancement of auto parts like engines,, gas regulator, the Neuspeed cold air intake, radiators and more. It also necessitates in-depth studies and testing.Dave McCurdy, the head of the Alliance of Automotive Manufacturers, the trade group that represents the General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler AG and the Toyota Motor Corp. among others, offered a lackadaisical response. "Automakers support reforming and raising car fuel economy standards, consistent with the need to preserve jobs and consumer choice. Determining the right level for the future will require sound science and engineering, in an open process that involves everyone," McCurdy said.

Fuel efficient vehicles are in demand these days and car manufacturers like Ford Motor Co. are scrambling to provide their customers with what they are looking for. Recently, the Dearborn, Michigan-based, gas regulator, automaker announced together with Southern California Edison that they will be partnering to clear the way for the future of future plug-in electric cars.According to reports, Ford's Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally will be meeting with, gas regulator, Edison International's Chief Executive Officer John Bryson. The meeting is scheduled to take place at Edison International's head office in Rosemead, California. The meeting was announced by both companies. The head of the two companies will announce a joint venture that would mark the first time that an automaker and a major utility company will be working together in the development of plug-in hybrid technology. This tie-up between, gas regulator, the two companies is seen as a huge step forward in the fight against the increasing threat of global warming.Information is scant following the announcement by the two companies. But experts in the auto industry are, gas regulator, expecting that the two companies will be developing a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Such vehicles have two-fold importance. First, the use of hybrid vehicles, especially on with a plug-in capability reduces the amount of petroleum fuel consumed. The second is that since less, gas regulator, petroleum fuel are burned; greenhouse gas emission will also be reduced. It is only fitting that the meeting should take place in the state of California. The state has one of the toughest emission regulations all over the world. Environmentalist from the said state are also outspoken about their support for the production of environment friendly vehicles. Through the years, they have lobbied for regulations which will force carmakers to produce more green cars. The sentiment of many concerned, gas regulator, citizens was given voice by Sherry Boschert, an advocate for the promotion of plug-in vehicles saying: "I think they're all realizing that the handwriting is on the wall."Southern California Edison supplies power to more than 13 million people around the Los Angeles area. The company, like environmentalists has been calling for the development and production of electric vehicles. The company is also lobbying for the government to grant incentives to carmakers involved in the development of advanced green cars.According to the company, they can generate enough power to supply millions of plug-in hybrid cars if they are recharged during the night when the demand for power is low. Aside from providing power to vehicles, the process can be reversed according to some researches made recently. This means that if Ford comes out with a plug-in hybrid vehicle with all the, gas regulator, trappings including a Ford catalytic converter for even less greenhouse gas emission, the vehicle can provide, gas regulator, power back to the grid. During peak, gas regulator, hours when power demand is high, a plug-in hybrid vehicle can be used to supply power to a household. Ford is set to continue its dedication to developing green vehicles with this collaboration with Edison. It can be remembered that FoMoCo became the first American automaker to mass produce a hybrid vehicle in the form of the Escape Hybrid. The said hybrid version of the compact SUV was introduced in the market by FoMoCo in 2004.
